“We’re sure those satellites are a bluff, Chief? Because if a single one of them so much as scratches the paint on my ship, I’ll be court-martialing you,” said Hawk, as he scanned his display console.

“I’ll be relying on Mr. James’ excellent sharp-shooting then, Captain, to save my hide—and your ship—but all the indications are that those satellites are just for show,” the chief replied.

“I’ve got your back, Chief. Don’t worry. If one of those satellites even gives us a nasty look, I’ll vaporize it. Scanners still clear, though, and radio silence from the shuttle. Whatever’s playing out down there, it’s happening quietly,” said L’Wren.

Hawk smiled at their banter, satisfied for the moment that the situation was stable. The Sulaco was where it needed to be. The shuttle was still where it should be, and his crew members were all at their stations, ready to give everything for him and the ship. He might be the captain, but without his crew—without those very special, totally professional and dependable people—he couldn’t do what he had to do. He looked across at the chief, the man who’d gotten the Sulaco out of so many difficult situations in the past that he’d lost count. Then his gaze, as it so often did, went to his first mate, Mr. L’Wren James.

Did she really know how much she meant to him, he wondered? Did she know that in her—in that fiery little green-skinned, emerald-eyed alien woman—he’d found his soul mate? Did she truly get how much she made his job bearable? How much she made the loneliness of command so much less lonely?

Okay, so the incident with Anchises had been a bolt out of the blue, a reminder of feelings he’d long since thought gone and forgotten, but he was okay with that.

Well, if he were honest with himself, he wasn’t totally okay. Had he betrayed L’Wren with…with another man? Damn, the emotions had been overwhelming, almost out of his control. He felt deeply for the Turacoenan. He couldn’t deny it. Yet it hadn’t altered his feelings for L’Wren.

He was torn.

Or was he, really? Did he want both of them in his life?

If it wasn’t for this damn mission protocol, he’d be back in his quarters with L’Wren as soon as this crisis was over, making damn sure she knew just how much the captain of the Sulaco needed and appreciated his first mate. But maybe, just maybe, Anchises could be part of that as well?

Once this mission was over, he was going to have a long talk with Anchises about what had actually happened between them—physically and emotionally.

But meanwhile, there was a silent shuttlecraft down there on a planet at war and two lost Doves who were his responsibility.
